UT San Diego, Maureen Magee… Grammy award-winning musician Jason Mraz has adopted Burbank Elementary in San Diego, the latest partnership to come from the White House’s celebrity-embraced initiative to turn around underperforming schools with the arts, the Obama administration announced Tuesday.
Mraz will serve as Burbank’s mentor as the school works with the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and Turnaround Arts CA to infuse the arts into curriculum and campus culture over the next three years.
“I’m humbled by the opportunity to support and represent a school in our country and my local community that will greatly benefit from the support of a vibrant arts education program,” Mraz said in a statement. “The arts are the key to life and the Turnaround Arts program will open the doors for youth to life, love, creativity and endless imagination.”

ABOUT US
Turnaround Arts is a national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It was founded in 2011 by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, a White House advisory committee on cultural issues, under the leadership of former First Lady Michelle Obama. The program is based on the premise that high-quality and integrated arts education can strengthen school transformation efforts, boost academic achievement, and increase student engagement in schools facing some of the toughest educational challenges in the country.
