Recordnet.com…STOCKTON — Fremont/Lopez Elementary School’s Mariachi Los Toritos band performed a Valentine’s Day concert Wednesday at San Joaquin Elementary School, one of several campuses they’ll visit before leaving for Washington, D.C., in early March to play in the Kennedy Center.

Mariachi Los Toritos will perform March 11 at the Turnaround Arts Talent Show in the Capitol, one of four participating Turnaround Arts partner schools from California selected to join peers from across the nation in highlighting the power of the arts to engage, empower and transform school communities.

It won’t be the first time at the Capitol for the Stockton Unified school’s young performers. In February 2016, they were invited to take part in a special workshop hosted by former first lady Michelle Obama at the White House before performing in the Turnaround Arts concert. Fremont/Lopez also hosted music legend Smokey Robinson last April and entrepreneur, activist and hip-hop producer Russell Simmons last May to mentor the young students in Turnaround Arts. The program provides arts education services designed to increase chances of success, engage the community and raise the visibility of students’ achievements in schools facing some of the toughest educational challenges in the country. Fremont/Lopez Elementary School is one of 17 Turnaround Arts partner schools in California, and one of 73 schools nationwide.
